Saturday, April 13, Concert 1pm, Irish Session 2pm
What's a 'session'? It's a time for musicians to play Irish tunes together!
Boston-based Matt and Shannon Heaton play updated and traditional Irish music on flute, accordion, guitar, bouzouki, and voices. Having performed all over the world, they’ll stop by our library for a fun hour of traditional tunes, songs, and stories. Following the concert, the Heatons will lead an Irish session at a nice moderate pace with standard jigs and reels. Bring your flutes and fiddles, and play along with the tunes you know… and hang out for the chat in between sets.
With engaging stage presence and masterfully-crafted music, Boston-based Matt and Shannon Heaton offer well-travelled Irish music from the heart: a satisfying mix of tunes and song, new and old, stirring and lively. The Heatons are an integral part of Boston’s vibrant trad music scene. Shannon cofounded Boston’s Celtic music fest and served on its board for 15 years, creating opportunities for hundreds of traditional musicians and dancers. She was named Massachusetts Traditional Artist Fellow in 2016, and she hosts the culture podcast Irish Music Stories. Matt has performed with countless ensembles, including the Karan Casey Band, Boys of the Lough, and Robbie O’Connell. In addition to his work as an Irish accompanist on guitar and bouzouki, “Their playing is masterful and inventive, their arrangements city-smart and spacious. Still, they never forget that Irish music is, at its heart, a neighborly form, meant for sharing, not showing off." —The Boston Globe
