Children in the library (Policy)

Parents of a library kid

You play an important role in helping to make your child's library visit a positive experience. In the best interest of all concerned, and for the safety of your child, we need to share with you a few of our policies.

Therefore we ask that . . .

* All children under the age of 8 shall be at all times attended and supervised by an adult or a mature adolescent…not the library staff.

* Parents are responsible for their child/children when using the library, please be mindful of the following: noise level, running, pulling items off the shelves, tantrums, bathroom needs, and social interaction with other children.

* If your child is unhappy, please remove your child from the main library when trying to calm him or her. The bathrooms, the foyer, or the parking lot are good places to go where others will not be disturbed.

* Children 9 and older may use the library unaccompanied by an adult for up to three hours (for example, from after school until the child's ride arrives). Library staff cannot assume responsibility for children's safety or behavior or their choice of library materials.

* Parents will be contacted if any child under the age of 9 is unaccompanied by an adult in any area of the Mount Horeb Public Library. As per the library's Unattended Children policy, the police will be contacted if we cannot locate the parents.

* The LINKcat computers are not for use by children under 5. Children between the ages 5 and 7 must be strictly supervised by an adult when using the computers.

* Children under the age of 18 who want to use the Internet must have a parent's or guardian's permission recorded on the child's library card. Children MUST present their library card when signing up to use the computer lab or gaming computers.

* Please help your child to be considerate of all the people who use the library; some grownups still recall the library as a quiet place, please be respectful of this point of view.

* Please share the information on the kids' code of conduct with your child.

Thank you ~ the Library Staff
