Read to a Dog

Hooper the reading dog will be visiting the library every Tuesday to listen to young readers read their favorite stories!

What is read to the dog?
Read to the dog is a reading assistance dog program. The program provides an opportunity for your child to read to a registered therapy dog in a relaxed atmosphere. The dog sits calmly and quietly for a story. Children can practice reading out loud without fear of judgment. It's a great way for children to gain confidence in their reading.

Who is this program for?
Kids who have completed 1st - 5th grade (approximately: 6-11 years old)

How does this program work?
Each participant signs up for a 10-15 minute session during which time they can read to the dog, without fear of being judged or graded on their reading ability. This program provides a relaxed environment in which the child feels comfortable and is able to improve their reading and communication skills

Should my child bring something to read?
Children can bring their own books or pick library books before their allotted time. No parents or siblings, please.

What if my child has pet allergies of dog fears?
The library does not recommend this program is your child is afraid or allergic to dogs.

Benefits of Reading Aloud to Dogs: Increases enthusiasm for reading, develops reading skills, teaches children how to interact with animals and promotes confidence!
